Treating gum disease in this earliest and mildest stage is a fairly simple matter and can generally be accomplished with good oral hygiene and a teeth cleaning. The reason that gum disease treatment may involve a teeth cleaning is because the harmful bacteria breed faster behind tartar. When the dentist removes this layer of tartar during a cleaning, the bacteria can be removed and the periodontal gum disease problems should disappear so long as proper oral hygiene is maintained.
